Meta Description Length Calculator
The Snippet That Decides Whether Someone Clicks
A meta description doesn't directly affect rankings, but it's frequently the deciding factor in whether a searcher clicks your result over the one above or below it. Get the length wrong in either direction and you either waste the opportunity to sell the click or hand Google a snippet that gets truncated mid-sentence in the results page.
The Formula
The calculator simply counts every character in the field you paste in, including spaces and punctuation, and compares it against the commonly recommended display window.
Where This Matters
- Pre-publish QA — checking a drafted meta description before it goes live, since edits after publishing take time to reflect in search results.
- Auditing an existing site — running older pages' descriptions through the check to find ones that are too short (wasting available space) or too long (getting cut off).
- Template design — setting character budgets for dynamically generated descriptions (e.g. on ecommerce product pages) so templates stay within range across the whole catalog.
Length Status Bands
| Character Count | Status | Guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Under 150 | Too Short | Add more detail to reach the ~150–160 character sweet spot. |
| 150 – 160 | Optimal | Displays fully in most search result layouts. |
| Over 160 | Too Long | Risk of truncation with an ellipsis in search results. |
Google doesn't enforce a hard character limit — it truncates based on rendered pixel width, so this range is a widely-used practical guideline rather than an exact cutoff.
How to Use This Calculator
