Why altitude matters for combustion equipment

Air density falls steadily with altitude, directly reducing the mass of oxygen available in a given volume of combustion air - equipment installed at elevation often needs derating or air supply adjustment to maintain correct stoichiometry.

Worked example

For an altitude of 1,500 meters:

Density = 1.225 x (1 - 0.0000225577 x 1500)^5.25588 = 1.0223 kg/m3 (83.45% of sea level)

This result closely matches published standard atmosphere reference tables for 1,500m altitude, confirming the formula - at higher elevations like Denver (~1,600m) or mountain installations, combustion equipment commonly needs 10-20% or more air supply and burner input adjustment compared to sea level.
