The fundamental relationship behind air density

Air density depends on both pressure and temperature, not altitude alone - weather conditions and equipment operating temperature can shift combustion air density just as significantly as elevation does.

Worked example

For standard sea-level conditions (101.325 kPa, 15C):

Density = 101.325 / (0.287 x 288.15) = 1.2252 kg/m3

This result matches the internationally recognized standard atmosphere sea-level density of 1.225 kg/m3 almost exactly, confirming the formula against a well-known reference value - the specific gas constant for dry air (0.287 kJ/kg.K) used here comes directly from the universal gas constant divided by air's average molar mass.
