A burner that cycles on and off does not fully cool between cycles - the hot refractory and casing keep radiating and convecting heat away even while the flame is off, a real and often overlooked energy cost.

Formula: Q = U × A × ΔT

Example: a U-value of 5 W/m²K over 3 m² of surface area at a 150K temperature difference gives 2,250 W of continuous standby loss.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the enclosure's overall heat transfer coefficient (U-value).
  2. Enter its exposed surface area.
  3. Enter the temperature difference between the hot surface and surroundings.

Burners that cycle frequently accumulate this loss many times a day, which is why reducing cycling frequency (through better turndown, sizing, or control strategy) can meaningfully cut total standby losses over a year.
