Why ROI needs a large sample to mean anything

Tournament poker results carry enormous variance - a single tournament's outcome says very little about a player's actual skill-based edge, which only becomes statistically meaningful once tracked across a much larger sample of tournaments, often hundreds.

Worked example

For $12,000 in total tournament winnings against $10,000 in total buy-ins:

ROI = ((12000 - 10000) / 10000) x 100 = 20.0%

Serious tournament poker players typically track ROI over hundreds of tournaments before drawing meaningful conclusions about their true edge, since short-term results are dominated by variance rather than skill signal.
