Grocery Budget Calculator
Turning a Weekly Habit Into a Monthly Number
Grocery spending is usually tracked weekly, but bills, savings goals, and household budgets run monthly — and the two don't line up cleanly because a month isn't exactly four weeks. This calculator converts a weekly grocery budget, or a per-meal spending pattern, into a realistic monthly figure using the actual average weeks per month.
The Formula
From weekly budget: Monthly Budget = Weekly Budget × 4.33
From meals: Monthly Budget = Meals per Day × Cost per Meal × 30
From meals: Monthly Budget = Meals per Day × Cost per Meal × 30
4.33 is the average number of weeks in a month (52 weeks ÷ 12 months), which is more accurate than simply multiplying by 4. The meals-based mode instead assumes a standard 30-day month.
Where This Matters
- Household budgeting — setting a realistic monthly grocery line item instead of underestimating by using a flat 4-week multiplier.
- Meal-plan costing — estimating a month's food spend from a per-meal cost, useful for meal-kit or meal-prep comparisons.
- Budget adjustments — checking how a change in weekly spending or per-meal cost ripples into the monthly total.
Worked Example
| Weekly budget | Monthly budget (× 4.33) |
|---|---|
| $100 | $433.00 |
| $150 | $649.50 |
| $200 | $866.00 |
Monthly Budget = Weekly Budget × 4.33.
