Royalties baked directly into the token
NFT royalties automatically pay the original creator a percentage on every subsequent resale, encoded directly into the token's smart contract - a mechanism that doesn't exist for most traditional resold goods.
Worked example
For a $1,000 resale with a 5% creator royalty:
Royalty = 1000 x 5% = 50
Seller Proceeds (before other marketplace fees) = 950.0
Typical royalty rates range from 2.5% to 10%, though enforcement varies significantly by marketplace - some platforms have made royalty payment optional for buyers rather than mandatory, which has become a notable point of tension in the NFT ecosystem between creators and marketplaces.
