Why pools smooth out mining reward variance
Mining pools combine many individual miners' computing power to find blocks more consistently than any single miner could alone, splitting the block reward proportionally by contributed hashrate - dramatically smoothing reward variance compared to solo mining.
Worked example
For 100 units of your hashrate out of a 10,000-unit pool total, sharing a 6.25 coin block reward:
Your Share = 100 / 10000 = 1.0%
Your Payout = 6.25 x 1.0% = 0.0625 payout (1.0% of pool hashrate)
This simplified calculation doesn't include the typically small pool operator fee that real mining pools deduct from payouts - check your specific pool's actual fee structure for a complete picture of expected earnings.
