Why the average isn't a simple average of prices
Dollar-cost averaging into a volatile asset across multiple purchases at different prices produces an average cost basis weighted by dollars invested at each price point, not a simple average of the prices themselves.
Worked example
For three $100 purchases at $20,000, $25,000, and $30,000:
Total Coins = (100/20000) + (100/25000) + (100/30000) = 0.01233 coins
Average Cost = 300 / 0.01233 = 24,324.32 average cost per coin
Notice the average cost (24,324) sits below the simple average of the three prices (25,000) - buying more coins when the price is lower (for the same dollar amount) pulls the weighted average down more than an equal dollar purchase at a higher price pulls it up.
This is informational only, not financial advice - cryptocurrency investing carries substantial risk, and past cost basis calculations don't predict future performance.
