Bitcoin's smallest unit, named after its creator

The satoshi is Bitcoin's smallest indivisible unit - much like cents are to dollars, except Bitcoin divides into 100 million units rather than just 100, allowing for extremely precise transaction amounts.

Worked example

For 1 BTC:

Result = 1.0 BTC = 100,000,000 sats

Sats are commonly used for pricing small transactions and network fees, where whole-Bitcoin denominations would involve awkward, hard-to-read decimal fractions - as Bitcoin's price has risen, "sats" have become an increasingly common everyday unit for smaller everyday transactions and Lightning Network payments.
