Mining Profit Is a Race Between Your Share of the Network and Your Power Bill

Proof-of-work mining pays out in proportion to hashrate share, not effort. A miner running a fixed hashrate against a growing network sees its expected coin production shrink even if nothing about the hardware changes, while the electricity bill stays constant. This calculator combines your hashrate against the network total, the block reward and timing, the coin's price, and your power costs into a single daily and monthly profit figure — the number that actually determines whether a rig is worth running.

The Formula

Your Share = Your Hashrate ÷ Network Hashrate
Daily Coins = Your Share × (86400 ÷ Block Time) × Block Reward
Daily Revenue = Daily Coins × Coin Price × (1 − Pool Fee%)
Daily Power Cost = (Watts ÷ 1000) × 24 × Electricity Cost/kWh
Daily Profit = Daily Revenue − Daily Power Cost

A Worked Example

Suppose a rig runs at 110 TH/s against a hypothetical network total of 600,000,000 TH/s, with a 3.125-coin block reward every 600 seconds, a coin price of $60,000, a 1% pool fee, drawing 3,250 watts at $0.08/kWh:

Hashrate, network total, and coin price are illustrative inputs to demonstrate the mechanism, not current network or market figures. In this example the rig is unprofitable at the assumed electricity rate — a reminder that the same hardware can flip from profitable to loss-making purely on a power price or network difficulty change.

Where This Calculation Matters

  • Hardware purchase decisions — comparing a miner's expected daily profit against its purchase price to estimate a payback period before buying.
  • Electricity rate shopping — small differences in $/kWh have an outsized effect on profitability since power cost is the main ongoing expense.
  • Pool selection — comparing pools with different fee percentages against the same hashrate and hardware assumptions.
