Why raw fee amounts can mislead
Comparing fee percentage rather than raw fee amount makes it possible to fairly compare trading costs across exchanges and trade sizes - a flat fee that looks small on a large trade can represent a surprisingly large percentage cost on a small trade.
Worked example
For a $2.50 fee on a $1,000 trade:
Fee Percentage = (2.50 / 1000) x 100 = 0.25%
This same $2.50 fee would represent 2.5% on a $100 trade instead of 0.25% - which is exactly why frequent small transactions can accumulate meaningfully higher percentage costs than the same total volume traded in fewer, larger transactions.
