Trading Fees Quietly Eat Into Every Round Trip
A Bitcoin trade looks simple until the fees on both sides of the transaction are accounted for. Most exchanges charge separately on the buy and the sell, and because each fee is applied to a different dollar amount, the two percentages don't just cancel out. This calculator works from the actual amount of BTC held, plus the buy and sell prices and fee percentages, to show the real profit and return — not the naive difference between sell price and buy price.
The Formula
Proceeds = Sell Price × Amount × (1 − Sell Fee%)
Profit = Proceeds − Cost
ROI = (Profit ÷ Cost) × 100
Fees increase the effective cost basis on entry and reduce the effective proceeds on exit, so a trade that looks profitable on raw price alone can shrink noticeably once both fee legs are applied.
A Worked Example
Buying 0.5 BTC at $40,000 and selling at $52,000, with a 0.5% fee charged on both the buy and the sell:

Where This Calculation Matters
- Post-trade review — confirming the actual return on a closed position after both fee legs, rather than eyeballing the price difference.
- Comparing exchanges — the same trade can produce noticeably different net profit depending on whether an exchange charges 0.1% or 0.5% per side.
- Break-even planning — working out how far the price needs to move before a position covers both fee legs and turns a real profit.
