Gathering/Ruffle Ratio Calculator

Gathering/Ruffle Ratio Calculator: Cut the Right Amount of Flat Fabric

A gathered ruffle always starts as a longer piece of flat fabric that gets bunched down to the finished length, and the ratio between the two determines how full the ruffle looks. This calculator works out how much flat fabric to cut for your desired finished length and fullness.

The Formula

Flat Fabric Length = Desired Finished Length × Gather Ratio

Worked Example

A desired finished (gathered) length of 40", using a moderate 2:1 gather ratio.

Flat Fabric Length = 40 × 2 = 80 inches

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter your desired finished (gathered) length in inches.
  2. Optionally adjust the gather ratio (2:1 is moderate; 1.5:1 is subtler, 3:1 or higher is fuller).
  3. Click Calculate to get the flat fabric length to cut before gathering.
