Total Binding = 2 x (Quilt Width + Quilt Length) + Extra Allowance
Example
A 60in x 80in quilt, 10-inch extra allowance:
Perimeter = 280 in → 290 inches of binding needed
Why the Extra Allowance Matters
The extra allowance beyond the raw perimeter accounts for mitering the four corners cleanly and for a neat, overlapping seam where the binding strip's two ends join together - skipping this buffer is a common reason quilters run just short of enough binding right at the finish line.
Converting to Fabric Yardage
Once you have the total binding length needed, dividing by the number of strip-widths you can cut across your fabric's width tells you how many strips (and therefore how much fabric yardage) to purchase or cut.
