Cord Length Needed = Seam Length + 4 inches
Bias Strip Length Needed = Seam Length + 4 inches
Example
A 36-inch seam length:
40 in cord, 40 in bias strip (at chosen width)
Why the Extra 4 Inches Matters
Adding a small buffer beyond the exact seam length provides enough slack to neatly join the piping's two ends together at the end of the seam and to ease the piping smoothly around curves - piping cut to the exact seam length with no buffer often pulls tight around curves, puckering the surrounding fabric.
Bias-Cut Strips Are Essential for Curves
Cutting the covering strip on the true bias (at a 45-degree angle to the fabric grain) gives it the stretch needed to wrap smoothly around curved seams without puckering - a strip cut on the straight grain will resist curving and create a lumpy, uneven finish.
