Bias Tape Length Calculator

Bias Tape Length Calculator: Bind an Edge Without Running Short

Binding an edge with bias tape requires slightly more tape than the raw edge measurement, to allow for a clean, overlapped join where the two ends meet. This calculator adds that overlap allowance for you.

The Formula

Bias Tape Length = Edge Perimeter + Overlap Allowance

Worked Example

A 60" edge to bind, with the standard 2" overlap allowance.

Bias Tape Length = 60 + 2 = 62 inches

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the total perimeter of the edge you're binding in inches.
  2. Optionally adjust the overlap allowance (2" is standard).
  3. Click Calculate to get the total bias tape length needed.
