Why a Waste Factor Is Necessary
Irregularly shaped applique pieces don't nest together perfectly on a rectangular sheet of fusible web the way simple squares or rectangles would - tracing each shape individually leaves unusable scrap material between and around every traced piece.
Complex Shapes Need a Higher Waste Factor
Highly irregular or curved shapes (like intricate floral or animal designs) typically warrant a higher waste factor than simple geometric shapes, since their awkward outlines leave proportionally more unusable scrap space on the fusible web sheet.
