Total Blocks = ceil(Quilt Width / Block Size) x ceil(Quilt Length / Block Size)
Example
A 60in x 80in quilt, using 10-inch blocks:
6 across x 8 down → 48 blocks needed
This Calculates Blocks Before Sashing
This calculates blocks needed for a finished quilt top with blocks placed directly edge-to-edge, before any sashing (the connecting strips of fabric between blocks) is factored in - a design using sashing will need fewer total blocks to cover the same finished dimensions, since sashing strips add extra width and length between each block.
Rounding Up Means Slightly Larger Than Requested
Since block count rounds up to the nearest whole block in each direction, the actual finished quilt size using this many blocks may come out slightly larger than your originally requested dimensions - plan borders or trimming accordingly if an exact final size matters.
