Thread Length Estimator
Thread Length Estimator: Don't Run Out Mid-Seam
Thread usage is easy to underestimate, since a lockstitch seam uses both top and bobbin thread simultaneously, plus a bit more for tension and loop formation. This calculator estimates total thread length needed from your total seam length.
The Formula
Thread Length = Seam Length × Thread Multiplier
Worked Example
120 inches of total seam length, using the standard multiplier of 4.
Thread Length = 120 × 4 = 480 inches = 13.33 yards
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your total seam length in inches.
- Optionally adjust the thread multiplier (4 is typical for straight lockstitch seams; use a higher value for dense stitching like zigzag or satin stitch).
- Click Calculate to get the estimated thread length needed.
