Quilt Batting Calculator
Quilt Batting Calculator: Size Your Batting and Backing Correctly
Quilt batting and backing need to be cut larger than the finished quilt top to leave margin for basting, quilting shift, and squaring up before binding. This calculator adds that standard overhang to your quilt top dimensions.
The Formula
Batting Size = Quilt Top Size + (2 × Overhang)
Worked Example
A 60"×80" quilt top, with the standard 4" overhang per side.
Batting Width = 60 + 8 = 68", Batting Length = 80 + 8 = 88"
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the quilt top width and length in inches.
- Optionally adjust the overhang margin per side (4" is a common default).
- Click Calculate to get the batting and backing size to cut.
