Backorder Fulfillment Time Calculator

Backorder Fulfillment Time Calculator

Managing a product backorder? This calculator estimates how many days until the full backorder is cleared based on incoming supply.

Shipments Needed = ceil(Backorder Units / Units Per Shipment)
Estimated Days = Shipments Needed x Days Between Shipments

Example

500 units backordered, 150 units received per shipment, 7 days between shipments:

Shipments Needed = 4 → ~28 days to fully clear

Why This Is an Optimistic Estimate

This assumes zero new orders come in during the entire backorder-clearing period, which is rarely realistic for an actively selling product - new orders arriving during this window will extend the actual clearing timeline beyond this baseline calculation.

Communicate a Slightly Padded Estimate to Customers

Communicating a realistic, slightly padded estimated ship date to customers - rather than the most optimistic possible timeline - is generally better for customer satisfaction, since a date that slips later creates more frustration than a conservative estimate that ships a bit earlier than promised.
