Freight Cost Calculator

A Freight Rate Is Never Just the Rate

The per-pound or per-kilogram rate quoted by a carrier is only the starting point. Base fees for pickup or documentation and fuel surcharges — which move with diesel prices and can add double-digit percentages during periods of high fuel costs — both sit on top of the headline rate, and skipping them produces a budget that's wrong before the shipment even leaves the dock.

The Formula

Freight Cost = (Weight × Rate) + Base Fee, then + Fuel Surcharge

Weight multiplied by the rate per unit weight gives the core transportation charge. Adding a flat base fee produces a subtotal, and the fuel surcharge — entered as a percentage — is applied to that subtotal rather than to the base rate alone, since fuel surcharges are typically calculated on the full pre-surcharge charge.

Example

500 lb shipment at $0.35/lb, $25 base fee, 12% fuel surcharge
StepCalculationResult
Weight × rate500 × $0.35$175.00
Subtotal$175.00 + $25.00 base fee$200.00
Fuel surcharge (12%)$200.00 × 12%$24.00
Total$200.00 + $24.00$224.00

Where This Matters

  • Shipment budgeting — getting an accurate landed freight cost before it's built into a product's price or a customer's invoice.
  • Carrier rate comparison — a low headline rate can still lose to a competitor once base fees and fuel surcharges are added in.
  • Fuel price sensitivity — testing how a rising fuel surcharge percentage affects total freight spend over a shipping lane.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the shipment's Weight.
  2. Enter the Rate per Unit Weight in dollars.
  3. Optionally enter a Base Fee.
  4. Optionally enter a Fuel Surcharge %.
  5. Select Calculate to see the subtotal and final total freight cost.
