Cargo Insurance Cost Calculator
Cargo Insurance Cost Calculator
Insuring a valuable shipment? This calculator estimates the premium based on declared cargo value and applicable insurance rate.
Insurance Premium = Declared Cargo Value x (Insurance Rate % / 100)
Example
$50,000 declared cargo value, 0.5% insurance rate:
Premium = 50,000 x 0.5% = $250.00
Why Insurance Rates Vary So Much
Cargo insurance rates commonly range from roughly 0.3% up to 1% or more of declared value depending on cargo type, transport mode, and route risk - high-value, fragile, or high-theft-risk cargo like electronics or pharmaceuticals typically carries a meaningfully higher rate than standard, low-risk freight like bulk raw materials.
Carrier Liability Coverage Is Usually Insufficient
Standard carrier liability coverage included in a shipping contract is often capped at a fairly low per-pound amount, far below the actual value of many shipments - dedicated cargo insurance is commonly purchased specifically to cover this gap between actual cargo value and limited default carrier liability.
