A shipment's true cost is scattered across transportation invoices, warehouse fees, the capital tied up in inventory while it sits on a shelf, and a long tail of accessorial charges that never quite fit a single category. Pulling those pieces into one total is the only way to compare routes, carriers, or fulfillment strategies on equal footing.
The Formula
Each term is a direct dollar input, so the calculation itself is simple addition — the value is in forcing every cost bucket onto the table before you compare totals. Add an optional units figure and the calculator also divides the total by volume to produce a cost-per-unit figure, which is the number that actually belongs in a pricing or margin model.
Where This Matters
- Carrier and 3PL comparisons — a quote with a low transportation rate can still lose to a competitor once warehousing and carrying costs are added back in.
- Make-vs-outsource decisions — comparing in-house warehousing against a third-party fulfillment fee requires the same all-in total on both sides.
- Per-unit pricing — dividing total logistics cost by units shipped shows how much of a product's price is consumed by getting it to the customer, before margin is even considered.

Inventory carrying cost typically includes capital cost, storage, insurance, and shrinkage — it's often the most underestimated line in this total.
