Fuel Blend Calculator: Predict Blended Fuel Heating Value

Co-firing plants and mixed fuel supplies need to know the resulting heating value when two fuels with different energy content are combined. This calculator computes that mass-weighted average directly.

The Formula

Blended HV = (Fraction1 × HV1 + Fraction2 × HV2) / (Fraction1 + Fraction2)

Worked Example

A blend is 70% fuel with a heating value of 45 MJ/kg and 30% fuel with a heating value of 20 MJ/kg.

Blended HV = (0.7 × 45 + 0.3 × 20) / 1.0 = 37.5 MJ/kg

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the mass fraction and heating value of the first fuel.
  2. Enter the mass fraction and heating value of the second fuel.
  3. Click Calculate to get the blended heating value.
