Refractory walls are not perfect insulators - some heat always conducts through to the outside, following the same basic law that governs heat conduction through any material.
The Formula
Q = (k × A × ΔT) / L
Worked Example
A refractory with 0.15 W/mK conductivity, 10 m² area, 800K temperature difference, 200mm thick: Q = (0.15 × 10 × 800) / 0.2 = 6,000 W = 6 kW.

Doubling wall thickness halves this heat loss - which is exactly the trade-off refractory design balances against material cost and internal furnace volume.
