At furnace scale, combustion gases spend a full second or more inside the chamber before exiting - a very different timescale from the millisecond-scale residence time inside the flame's own thin reaction zone.
Formula: t = V / Q
Example: a 12 m³ furnace with 3 m³/s of gas flow gives a 4 second residence time.
