Furnace Residence Time Calculator

Furnace Residence Time Calculator: Gas Dwell Time in the Combustion Chamber

Residence time is the average duration combustion gases spend inside a furnace or combustion chamber before exiting. It directly affects how completely fuel burns and how much time pollutant-forming reactions have to run, making it a key parameter for both efficiency and emissions compliance.

The Formula

Residence Time (s) = Furnace Volume(m³) × 3600 / Gas Flow Rate(m³/hr)

Worked Example

A furnace chamber has a volume of 20 m³ and gas flows through at 36,000 m³/hr.

Residence Time = 20 × 3600 / 36,000 = 2.0 seconds

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter the internal furnace volume in cubic meters.
  2. Enter the volumetric gas flow rate in m³/hr.
  3. Click Calculate to see the residence time in seconds.
