A Growing Jackpot Doesn't Automatically Mean a Good Bet

Progressive jackpots climb every time a play doesn't hit, which creates an intuitive pull toward believing the wager gets "better" as the number grows. Mathematically, that's true in a narrow sense — the expected value of a play does rise with the jackpot — but most progressive games are structured so the jackpot would need to reach an enormous, often unrealistic size before the expected value actually turns positive.

Break-even jackpot scales linearly with the inverse of win probability — a game with 10 times longer odds needs a jackpot 10 times larger just to reach expected-value parity, before accounting for the fact that large jackpots are frequently split among multiple winners.

Where This Gets Used

  • Evaluating a specific jackpot size — checking whether a currently advertised jackpot has actually crossed the mathematical break-even point for its stated odds.
  • Understanding why "the jackpot is huge" isn't the whole story — a large headline number still needs to be compared against the game's actual odds, which are rarely advertised as prominently.
  • Teaching expected value with a real-world hook — progressive jackpots are a widely recognizable example for illustrating how probability and payout size interact.
